Yay, today was great! I did lots of things and they were all good!
First, I met with Brenda and Mallary (the curators of the Cut & Run tour) and we discussed all the details of the tour. This shit is really happening! I am way excited.

After the meeting, I picked up Mitra and drove back down to the south bay to attend Alissa's graduation party. That ended up being very fun!!!! It was just lots of good people with good conversation and good food. I successfully steered the conversation into Buffy territory a few times. And we watched Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan! Which was totally fabulous. Today was just great! And tomorrow shall also be great.

| My finals situation |
[22 May 2009|03:53am] |
To-do for finals:
Art in the 1980's: The Postmodern Dilemma 1. See the Kentridge exhibit at the SFMOMA. 2. Write a short response essay about it. 3. Take the final exam.
Japanese Women Writers 1. Write the Happiness paper. 2. Take the final exam.
Imagery, Metaphor and Symbol 1. Write the final essay. 2. Do the parable workshop reflection.
Japanese Cultural Topics: TV and Radio 1. Do the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon presentation in class. 2. Write the ten-page beastly paper on Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.
Intro to Electronic Music Studio 1. Make a short FM synthesis sketch. 2. Make a final project. 3. Make an extra project to receive a final unit of credit.
No need to panic, right?
And uhh, GEEEEZ you guys. I had A TON OF SHIT TO DO. I feel slightly less bad about all the rushing around I had to do at the end of the semester. The next time my parents criticize me and my procrastination, I'm going to point out how very entitled I was to put all this shit off. And honestly? Many of these assignments' prompts were only available shortly before their due dates. It's not much of a procrastination if you had no other choice but to wait.
THIS WAS A HARD SEMESTER. More rewarding than last semester but.....ugh. I am so tired. So. Very. Tired. Will a semester ever end in which I DON'T long to leave the civilized world and become a mountain man?

| My day in list form |
[17 May 2009|12:22am] |
1. Woke up. 2. Picked up Gail. 3. Saw a car in front of us whose license plate was "AKAI MPC." (FUCK YES) 4. Got GREEN TEA LATTE at Starbucks (too delicious). 5. Drove to San Francisco. 6. Went to Sheng Kee bakery, got some vitasoy stuff and meaty bread things. 7. Met Jon and ate at Enjoy. We got curry triangles, the cold cuts platter, fried rice, eggplant with sea bass, lamb pot, and mongolian beef. For dessert, glossy bean jelly stuff. Jon's mind? BLOWN by the meatless meat. 8. Went to Marco Polo and got delicious awesome ice cream. Gail got green tea. Jon got black sesame (fucking amazing). I got durian/jackfruit. I was in heaven. 9. Went home.
I want my license plate to say "AKAI AX." On that note, I'm thinking of making a demo of AX60 sounds.

Oh man, being in a band is so amazing. Actually amazing. It amazes me. It's really made my life better! Mundane life is better when you have something fun to look forward to. And I have band practice to look forward to every week. I can't wait until Friday!!!!!!!!!
Playing music is just so fun. Especially now that I have an awesome synth that sounds fantastic. I can't wait to play it to Darremily.
Meanwhile, my album project is progressing fairly well. I've pretty much got a full tracklisting, and I have, excitingly, exceeded my projected number of eight songs to ten! This is good. I personally think eight tracks is great for a cohesive recording--nice and focused. But it is a little scant. Increasing the number of tracks will allow me room to be more experimental with content and will make the listeners feel less like they're getting shortchanged. I know the word on the street is that contemporary attention spans are short, but I think that's bullshit? At least, it's bullshit in the realm of popular music. Song and albums have got longer and longer. The length of an album used to be less than 45 minutes--tailored to the limitations of vinyl. Nowadays, an album is....much longer. Anyway, my point is, 10 songs is really good.

Hella stuff. Leave Christianity, give up on being a video game designer, masturbate, be gay, smoke weed, stop loving Japanese stuff, stop considering Björk my #1 musical interest...
I like how some are serious and some are frivolous.

So much happened yesterday. I had work and was all "work work work" and then immediately after I drove around and had to run a bunch of errands within an hour. I got everything (including getting all my music equipment into my car) done, and then drove up to SF for class.
I had a presentation in electronic music class so I had to lug my dulcimer and synth across campus (I had already got my other stuff into the studio). That synth gets HEAVY after you've been carrying it awhile! My arms are sore. I also had an awful emergency when I realized I had left my synth's power supply at home (argh).
My presentation/setup demo for class was....okay. I think I did a decent job, but the general reaction from class was "(blank stare)." Eventually some people talked to me but it could have been better!
After class was ELISA'S BIRTHDAY PARTY! It was so fun...I don't have much to say but that it was great and full of delicious food!
So yes, maybe those events combined with the tasty cider drink I had to inspire feelings of groggy "ugh" today!

| Cut and Run |
[25 Apr 2009|07:08pm] |
Whooo today was ridiculously awesome. It started with electronic music class, in which we talked about synth tunings. As you might imagine, Midi instruments are pretty good with alternative tunings. I sorta learned something new! Namely, that equal temperament is a sort of tuning "compromise" so you can play in every key on a piano. Since I'm always playing in D, maybe I should change things to a more "D"-friendly tuning...
After the show, I met up with Gail and we headed to the ATA for the video show I contributed to, "Cut & Run," which was curated by Emily, Brenda, and their friend Mallary. I met a ton of awesome people I know and like and also met house_of_flames in real life for the first time! It was so great! I pretty much loved every moment. There were so many highlights! Including a slow-motion video from 1987 by my professor of a muscle stud flirting with ladies and then realizing she's filming him. Yesss it was so awesome. I dunno, I just loved everything? There was also a cool performance by this guy I think I've met before, whose music project is called Elm. He played bowed electric guitar and made loops and it was really pretty! I hate using the term "atmospheric" but it was reverb-laden and amorphous!
After the show, Gail, Matt and I went and got some trashy Mexican food, which was all delicious and full of fatty wonder. However, I ate way more than could possibly be safe and felt kinda awful the rest of the night.
After dropping Gail off at her car, Matt and I headed to the afterparty at Darren and Brenda's house which was totally great. I saw so many people I love and had a blast! We (especially I) danced like the nerds we are. I cannot remain sane when OMD's "Enola Gay" comes on (I requested it)! After the party was our drive home which happened late enough to be considered "early." I got home at like 4am.
One of the most exciting things I heard at the party was that Jesse played my song on his radio show, when they talked about the video show. HOLY SHIT! I listened to the podcast today and sure enough, he did! They also discussed it a little bit which was exciting.
My life rules when there are shows.

| Dear Livejournal, |
[23 Apr 2009|04:19am] |

I love leaf vegetables SO MUCH. I swear this: When I move out, I will try and eat leafy greens at every meal. They're delicious, affordable, easy-to-prepare, high nutritious, and can fit into just about any meal.
This is what writing papers can do to a man. I am writing about my favorite vegetables in my livejournal when I should be writing about 11th century Japanese literary techniques (hint: it's not just the austere poetry about nature and tears).
Anyway, outside of school, my life is pretty okay. I finally used my Starving Musician gift card and bought a Yamaha TX81Z, which is a 4-operator FM synth from 1986 (the year I was born). I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I'm excited about working FM synthesis into my musical sounds. My personal life has been okay, too. I've spent good times with friends here and there, I think. And I've met some new, cool people, too, which is nice. I really, really need to have arty conversations with people to survive.
Have I mentioned that Kahimi Karie's Montage is crazily good? Because it is. The two opening tracks ("When Will You Be Back?" and "Making Our World") are just perfect. BUT, I can see how it owes something to Tilt (which I just listened to for the first time quite recently). It's not much of a stylisic development--in fact, I would say it shows somewhat of a stylistic regression after Trapeziste.
Yeah that's it. Back to The Tale of Genji.

Man accused of stomping kittens to death in Santa Maria
WHYYYYYYY WORLD!? e90fhgjsdgopjsdgfgdfgdf WHY DO THESE THINGS HAPPEN? Send me hella stories about people dying of AIDS or in airplane crashes and I'm like "yeah that's too bad" but bring out the kittens and I FREAK THE FUCK OUT. AAGGGGHHHHH THE KITTENS!!!!!!!
WELL, enough of that.
Have I mentioned that I love my electronic music class? We were listening to sine waves and I realized that I can hear really high. Like, 20,000Hz+. This tone my professor left on (not being able to hear it himself) was serious agony, so I asked him to turn it off. My classmates were like, "you can hear that!?" A-ha-ha, I am awesome. I have baby ears!
Whyyyyy do any other classes exist? That's how I feel sometimes.
Oh, Patrick Wolf. You really are one of my favorites...but do you think you could tone down the drama a bit? Your new songs (what I've heard of them) are all like "I AM FEELING THE BIGGEST DESPAIR, I WILL NEVER LOVE AGAIN BECAUSE LIFE IS HORRIBLE" and I'm like....god who cares. If I wanted melodrama, I would go teach at the local high school.
